The University of the Basque Country was created in the late sixties.
It has three major campuses in the capital of provinces of the Spanish
Basque Country, Bilbao, San Sebastian and Vitoria. There are two
Chemistry Faculties, one in Bilbao and another in San Sebastian.
The other Science Faculties are located in Bilbao.
In spite of its short history the University is one of the largest
universities in Spain, with some 62,000 students. The large number of
students can be attributed to the wide access given to school leavers
by the Spanish University system.
Bilbao and its province (Vizcaya) have been a leading industrial and
financial region for generations. It is the home of the large shipping
and steel industry which is currently undergoing a transformation into
a high-tech and service area. Parallel to this effort have been
upgrading of the city through a series of spectacular public works such
as the new underground designed by Norman Foster, a bridge by Calatrava,
Franck Gehry's Guggenheim museum of modern art, and the Calatrava's
airport terminal building. These have transformed Bilbao into a truly
modern city.
The Basque countryside is a succession of deep valleys and mountains
that are in part quite wild and remote. The isolation of these valleys
has preserved the traditional character of the inhabitants, who continue
to speak an ancient language whose origins are lost in time.
Within half-an-hour drive of Bilbao are areas of outstanting natural
beauty such as the Pagasarri and Ganecogorta mountains, La Arboleda,
Ermua and Plencia, Urdaibai, the cliffs along the coast, Durango and
the Amboto mountain range. At a slightly greater distance are places
that cater a wide range of interest. These are the Altamira caves and
surrounding regions of Santillana del Mar; La Rioja with vineyards and
villages; Merindad de Castilla la Vieja; monasteries and villages which
are typical of the old Castillian Kingdom, such as Santo Domingo de Silos,
Quintanilla de las Vinas and San Millan de la Cogolla; pre-romanesque
Asturias and high mountains of the chain called the "Peaks of Europe" and
of course the Pyrenees, to mention but a few of the beauty areas that you
may wish to enjoy during your visit.
